Dr. Greenfield and Anastasia Bierman will give a short power point presentation (15-20 minutes) on the origins, background, and popularity of the Gothic genre in late eighteenth-century England. The rest of the time will be devoted to a discussion of Ann Radcliff’s popular and influential gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, giving some attention to how Austen’s Northanger Abbey plays off of the Gothic genre in general and The Mysteries of Udolpho in particular.  It is recommended that attendees read The Mysteries of Udolpho
