What Jane Heard: A Virtual Presentation by Rose Nester
“There are few people in England, I suppose, who have more true enjoyment of music than myself, or a better natural taste.”—Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Pride and Prejudice
Long before it could be recorded, music was most often heard and enjoyed in small group settings, and playing and singing with some proficiency were considered two important skills for women in Jane Austen’s era. Like many of the characters in her novels, Austen played the pianoforte; attended concerts and dances; and collected sheet music from both English and foreign contemporary composers. In the virtual presentation “What Jane Heard,” Rose Nester will explore the instruments, the types of music played and sung, and even the influence of social class in music during Jane Austen’s time.
