The Gothic Context of Northanger Abbey
Presenters: John Greenfield, PhD and Anastasia Bierman
Dr. Greenfield and Anastasia Bierman will give a short power point presentation (15-20 minutes) on the origins, background, and popularity of the Gothic genre in late eighteenth-century England. The rest of the time will be devoted to a discussion of Ann Radcliff’s popular and influential gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, giving some attention to how Austen’s Northanger Abbey plays off of the Gothic genre in general and The Mysteries of Udolpho in particular. It is recommended that attendees read The Mysteries of Udolpho
Presenters:
John Greenfield earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He has taught at McKendree University for thirty-three years and was awarded Professor Emeritus status in May of 2017. He has edited several reference books, published articles, and presented papers on various literary topics.
Anastasia Bierman is an Instructor of English at St. Charles Community College and has a Master’s in English Literature from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
