In Memoriam: Virginia Lehr

Metropolitan St. Louis Region founding member Shirley Bassett reports that Virginia Lehr, one of our early members, passed away in her sleep Jan. 7. Many longtime region members will remember Virginia and her love of Austen.

Virginia was 93 at the time of her death. We offer our condolences to her family.

The following is Virginia’s obituary as it appeared recently in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Virginia “Jeannie” Margaret Lehr
July 6, 1921–Jan. 7, 2015

Virginia “Jeannie” Margaret Lehr died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 7, 2015. Born on July 6, 1921, Virginia spent many years working in the civil-service field. She was the loving aunt of Marjorie Barton of Ireland, who survives her. Jeanie was predeceased by her father, Philip Lehr, her mother, Margaret Lehr (nee Stehl), a brother, Virgil, and a sister, JoAnn Lehr Barton. She also leaves her beloved Yorkie, Daisy.

Jeannie had been living at Laclede Groves Senior Services Community, where her soft, gentle voice and friendly smile will be missed by many residents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Missouri Botanical Gardens.

Funeral service: Friday, January 9, 10:30 a.m. at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa. Interment will be at Memorial Park.
